The first and second seasons of the hit thriller series “The Tourist,” starring Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald, will shift to Netflix starting next February. The first season originally saw Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max as a co-producer and local streaming partner.
The Australia-set first season of “The Tourist” sees Dornan portray a man who, after an epic car chase in the outback, wakes up in a hospital with no idea who he is. He is forced on a brutal and often funny journey of self-discovery, while trying to stay one step ahead of the people trying to kill him.
Season 2 shifts the action to Ireland, where Dornan’s Elliot and Chambers are trying to rediscover Elliot’s roots. But they soon find themselves in the crosshairs of a rivalry between two dangerous families. Shalom Brune-Franklin and Greg Larsen are co-stars alongside Dornan and Macdonald.
Season 1 of “The Tourist” will be available on Feb. 1, 2024, on Netflix. New episodes from Season 2 will be available on Feb. 29. The Netflix premiere is the first time that the second season will be available in the U.S.
BBC retains rights to “The Tourist” in the U.K. and the broadcaster has set a Jan. 1 premiere date for the second season. Netflix has exclusive rights to both seasons of “The Tourist” for territories outside the U.K. In the U.S., “The Tourist” Season 1 rolled off Max this past September.
Created and written by Jack and Harry Williams, whose company Two Brothers Pictures (an All3Media company) also produced the show, “The Tourist” became one of the U.K.’s most-watched dramas last year. With All3Media handling rights sales, it was widely licensed, including to South Korea and Scandinavia.
Producers for Season 1 included Two Brothers Pictures for the BBC, in association with Highview Productions, All3Media International, the South Australian Film Corporation, HBO Max, Stan and ZDF. Producers for Season 2 were Two Brothers Pictures for the BBC, in association with Stan, ZDF and All3Media International.
In the second season, Fergus O’Brien (“Happy Valley”) directed the opening block with Johann Perry (“Gentleman Jack”) as DOP. Lisa Mulcahy (“Years and Years”) and Kate Dolan (“Kin”) directed blocks two and three respectively. Louise Kiely (“The Banshees of Inisherin”) was on board as casting director.
